DIA Youth workshop

Hosted by the Teen Arts Council, in this workshop with Bayan the Poet(opens in new window), participants will discuss and compare works by Jamila Woods (GIOVANNI), Nikki Giovanni (Ego Tripping), and Mickalene Thomas (Something You Can Feel). We will observe and analyze how these three artists use powerful imagery and symbolism in their works to portray themselves as Black womxn in uplifting ways.

Participants will then create their own body of work that reflects their self-image in an empowering, bold manner. This workshop will guide youth to reflect on their mental health and self-image during a time of crisis and isolation and leave with a reminder of how great they are regardless of circumstances they cannot control.

Writing 4 Freedom Summer Camp

Writing 4 Freedom Summer Camp

The 2nd annual Writing 4 Freedom Teen Summer Camp is a series of free workshops for teens in metro Detroit that will take place at Nandi’s Knowledge Cafe (July 2, 9, 16, 23, 4-7pm). In each workshop, teens will read, write and share critical and creative poetry and nonfiction works to enhance their understanding of their own identity & belonging, social justice frameworks, and ways they can resist and challenge the status quo in schools and society. This program is being co-created with youth who will also co-facilitate the sessions in order to center and empower youth voices.

The camp is an opportunity for teens to hone their writing craft, share with and learn from one another and guest artists, explore diverse and engaging literature while celebrating themselves in a fun & safe interactive space.

They will also learn practical forms of healing through meditation, yoga, dance, and art. The camp will develop teens to become change makers and thought leaders for their communities and this world.

Teens will showcase their work and talents at a final showcase July 30, 7-9pm at Nandi’s Knowledge Cafe - open to the public.

Making this program free will reduce economic barriers for teens to participate in the program. The funds will be used towards food, transportation, venue booking, books, notebooks, office supplies, host fees, videotaping & photographing, guest artists, tshirts, and final showcase fees.

Your support and generosity contributes to the next generation of social change who are continuing and will continue the necessary work of dismantling oppressive systems that are killing, hurting, and silencing marginalized communities.

Any remaining funds will be donated to Nandi’s Knowledge Cafe.

For further information or questions contact Bayan Founas at [email redacted] or on IG @thatalgerian.
